Why this task lends itself well to being taken over

That is a major difference from work that does require judgment, such as assigning warehouse locations, where available space, rotation speed and physical constraints of the warehouse have to be taken into account.

The volume is high: at a company with daily deliveries, this involves dozens to hundreds of registrations per week, all following the same pattern. High volume with low variation is exactly where automation pays off.

The physical element is limited to the inspection itself: someone counts the boxes, checks whether it matches the packing slip, and only then is it registered. That physical part remains human work or is supported by scanning, but the registration that follows is a matter of transferring data. That is a different kind of physical work than picking and packing goods, where the physical action itself is the core of the task and not just the administration surrounding it.

Where the limits lie

Three axes prevent this from being fully, blindly automated: creativity, judgment scope and cost of error.

Creativity scores low, and here that is actually an advantage: there is nothing to devise, only to register. Judgment scope scores average: in case of a discrepancy, for example a quantity that does not match the packing slip or a batch number that is not legible, someone has to decide what happens. Rpa registers what is there; it does not decide on a dispute with the supplier. Cost of error also scores average: an incorrectly registered quantity leads to an inventory discrepancy that comes back to haunt the chain later, for example when monitoring inventory levels or when automatically placing an order with a supplier based on a stock level that is incorrect. That is why review with human oversight remains appropriate here: the system registers, a person approves or rejects in case of discrepancies.

The condition that determines everything

Taking over this task without barcode scanning or RFID is, in practice, not much more than moving manual work from paper to screen. The gain lies in the integration: a scan that automatically recognizes the correct item, linked to a wms that in turn passes the data on to the erp. Without that integration, someone still has to manually retype the data, and then little has changed about the actual work.

At a company without scanning, with a standalone wms and erp that do not communicate with each other, this situation differs from what is described here. The task then remains largely human work, not because the task itself is unsuitable, but because the infrastructure is missing. Conversely: the further along the scanning and system integration already are, the larger the portion of this task that today already runs without human involvement.

What is already shifting

At companies where scanning and integration are in order, this task has often already largely shifted from entering data to checking it. The employee counts, scans, and checks the outcome; the retyping has disappeared. At companies without that infrastructure, this has not yet happened, and there the work remains as it was. That difference does not lie in the nature of the work, which is the same everywhere, but in the extent to which the underlying systems are set up to pass on data without intervention.

This shift does not stand apart from the rest of the warehouse. Receipt registration is often the first link in a chain that continues through production registration on the floor to inventory management and purchasing.
